Up for auction is a rare antique work entitled THE REMEMBRANCES OF A POLISH EXILE, published in Philadelphia by Adam Waldie in 1835. FIRST EDITION. 69 pages. While the book’s author is anonymous, the author was August Jakubowski, a young Pole who fought against the Russians in the “November Uprising,” a rebellion against Russian rule which was began in November 1830 and lasted until October 1831. Jakubowski must have been only 15 at the time of the Uprising, as he was born in 1815. After the crushing of the rebellion by the Russian Imperial Army in 1831, most of the members of the Polish Army crossed into Prussia and laid down their arms in preference to surrendering to Russia. As a result, many of them were forced into exile. Jakubowski made his way to the United States; unfortunately, his time in the United States was not long because he died of illness in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1837, at the age of 22. However, in this work, Jakubowski collected reminiscences of life in Poland, poetry and legends, and accounts of the rebellion. A small and slim 4” x 7” volume, bound in cross-hatched pink cloth with title label on front cover. Book comes with an intriguing and important provenance; a gift inscription on the flyleaf reads, “Alexander Bielaski to Arthur Hoyt, offers this book as a token of friendship. / Bangor, October 23rd, 1836.” Bielaski himself was a soldier in the November Uprising, at the age of 19, and he, too, made his way to the United States. Bielaski later became a Captain in the Union Army after moving to Illinois, where he was acquainted with Abraham Lincoln. Bielaski was killed in the Battle of Belmont, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, on November 7, 1861. A very important provenance, in a very rare book. Book in VERY GOOD condition. Good luck!
